After all, if the battery is dead, no one can use your application. In this session, Android engineer Jeffrey Sharkey will reveal the myriad ways — many unexpected — that your application can guzzle power and irritate users. You’ll learn about how networking affects battery life, the right and wrong ways to use Android-specific features such as wake locks, why you can’t assume that it’s okay to trade memory for time, and more.
Most companies want to dispose of their e-waste responsibly so they seek out an electronics recycler, or an asset recovery company. Unfortunately, all too often these e-waste recyclers are not recyclers at all. This eye-opening Basel Action Network (BAN) documentary featuring BAN founder Jim Puckett exposes the ugly underbelly of the computer recycling industry and what really happens with the used electronics discarded by businesses and individuals. The trade in toxic wastes leaves the poorer people of the world with an untenable choice between poverty and poison a choice that nobody should have to make. The Basel Action Network has qualified e-Steward recyclers that will not export toxic electronic waste to developing countries, including Redemtech, under its e-Stewards Initiative (www.e-stewards.org). Robert Houghton, president and CEO of Redemtech, a BAN e-Stewards Founder and leading IT asset disposition services provider, is interviewed.

diginfo – movie.diginfo.tv Sanyo develops immediately usable, new rechargeable battery product line. Sanyo has recently begun marketing a variety of “eneloop” related products. The product lineup features a solar battery charger, a pocket warmer featuring a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and, to spur the company’s eneloop sales promotion, a battery checker configured in the shape of a dog. Sanyo is excited about the future of its eneloop product series, products that it designed to promote the benefits of recycling, and also to support the company’s vision to engender a clean energy society. Disposable batteries contribute to environmental degradation, but up to now consumers have largely shunned rechargeable batteries because of their limited charge volume, short life cycle, and overall poor cost performance. Previously, buyers had to first charge the rechargeable batteries after purchase before they could use them, and these batteries would quickly lose their charge if left on the shelf. Now, however, buyers can use Sanyo’s new eneloop rechargeable batteries immediately after purchase, and can recharge them up to a thousand times. Buyers don’t have to worry about “battery memory effect”, and so it’s not necessary to completely discharge the batteries before recharging. Featuring immediate use after purchase and quick recharges, the eneloop battery series is definitely an environmentally friendly product line.
